Two 20-year-old students from Barangay Nama Pozorrubio town were rescued on Wednesday afternoon from a beach here after nearly drowning. However, their 21-year-old companion is still missing.
Based on the Pangasinan Police Provincial Office’s (PPPO) initial information, Chris Bautista and Gemma Cobebe were rescued by responding personnel of the Philippine Coast Guard, Municipal Risk Reduction and Management Council here, and the San Fabian Police Station.
“Our interview with the victims disclosed that a strong wave brought them to the deeper portion of the sea and they tried to hold on to each other to survive. However, Zander Licay was unable to hold on,” said Capt. Hermilita Guitering, officer-in-charge at the San Fabian Police Station, in an interview on Thursday.
The students were swimming at the San Fabian beach in Barangay Nibaliw Vidal when the incident happened, she said.
She added the search and rescue operation for the victim is still ongoing as of this posting.
Guitering said they are meeting with the barangay officials Thursday to come up with measures to further prevent drowning incidents on the beach.
“There were security personnel and warnings in the area provided by the barangay officials and there is continuous monitoring on the part of the police. The beachgoers told us the strong water currents are being experienced lately in the beach while some beachgoers are under the influence of alcohol,” she added.
Two drowning incidents have already been recorded in the town since January 1 this year.
One happened at the San Fabian beach while the other at the Binday Dam here.
